Health Unit Clinic History

On July 1st, 1955, the St. Helena Parish Health Unit got its start with the leadership of the Mayor and City Council of Greensburg and with the help of the St. Helena Police Jury. The original site was located on the Courthouse grounds where the Assessor’s office is located today. The cost of the building was about $20,000 and was paid from parish, state, and federal funds. Ms. Betty Lee was our first Nurse, Mr. W. F Strickland, our first Sanitarian, and Ms. Doris Travis was our first Chief Clerk. The staff worked in the old bank building, and then in a home where the Post Office is located today before moving into their new building on the courthouse square in the Spring of 1956.
Today, the St. Helena Health Unit is located at 53 North Second Street just behind the St. Helena Hospital and Nursing Home. The Health Unit has been at this location since 1983 and in 1994 added an additional wing. Ms. Betty Lee designed the layout of clinic rooms and offices at this location also. Our Health Unit Clinic is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Special nutrition counseling is conducted on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month and WIC on Fridays. The St. Helena Environmental Office is open Monday through Friday each week.
