The purpose of this code is to establish the minimum requirements to safeguard the public health, safety and general welfare through structural strength, means of egress facilities, stability, sanitation, adequate light and ventilation, energy conservation, and safety to life and property from fire and other hazards attributed to the built environment and to provide safety to fire fighters and emergency responders during emergency operations.

Any owner or authorized agent who intends to construct, enlarge, alter, repair, move, demolish or change the occupancy of a building or structure or to erect, install, enlarge, alter, repair remove, convert or replace any electrical, gas, mechanical, or plumbing system, the installation of which is regulated by the 2009 building and residential code, or to cause any such work to be done, shall first make application to the building official and obtained the required permit.

There are 6 steps to obtaining a building permit:

1. Obtain 911 Address

Your address may be obtained from the 911 Office located in the Police Jury Building at 17911 highway 43, Greensburg, and La. 70441. Please note that the environmental health department will require a valid 911 address before processing your application.

2. Plan Review (2 sets of plans, site plan)

Plan review fee is due at this time. Your plans can be brought to the building department office located in the Police Jury Building at 17911 highway 43, Greensburg, La. 70441.

3. File Permit Application at the Building Department

You will need the following items to complete the building permit process:
a. Legal Description of property.
b. Survey of property.
c. Site Plan showing where your home will be placed on your property.
d. Cash, Check or money order for payment of fees.

4. Obtain Permits- Building, Sewer, and Flood Elevation Certificate

You will obtain permits at the building department located in the Police Jury Building after plan review is complete.

5. Environmental Health Requirements

You will need the following items to completer the sewer permit process:
a. Survey of property
b. Deed of property
c. Copy of sewer and building permits

6. Utility Connection Form

No permanent electricity will be issued until all inspections have been approved and the environmental confirmation form has been received.
A certification of occupancy can be issued after all requirements are met.

Note: All commercial structures require state fire marshall approval prior to permitting process.
